What is TRF?

TRF (Their Reading Futures) is a programme for public libraries, school library services, and school libraries in the United Kingdom, working in partnership.

It provides training to help libraries deliver the best reader development services for young people.

TRF supports libraries to deliver on all Change for Children activity, through their work on reading.

TRF supports libraries and their staff to deliver on all national programme activity:

  • TRF Core Skills identify the skills library staff need in their work with young readers and their families
  • TRF Online Training resources help library staff to develop and improve these skills
  • TRF Planning and Evaluation tools help libraries to target activities and evaluate their impact
  • TRF Advocacy tools help libraries to use evidence they have collected to demonstrate their contribution and achievement

TRF Learning Pathways support libraries with all national programmes, projects and audiences:

TRF supports national policy agendas

  • Shared Priorities (raising standards in schools; improving the quality of life for children, young people and families
  • Framework for the Future (Developing the workforce, Improving staff skills, Enabling and encouraging children and young people to become enthusiastic readers)
  • Start with the Child, (Appropriate environments; Services that meet children's needs; Knowledgeable, helpful and welcoming staff; Good links with the community)

More about TRF

Their Reading Futures is a Reading Agency initiative being developed in partnership with the Association of Senior Children's and Education Librarians (ASCEL), the CILIP Youth Libraries Group (YLG), the Society of Chief Librarians (SCL), and the Arts Council.

TRF is funded by DCMS through the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) and it is a key part of the workforce development activity in the DCMS/MLA 'Framework for the Future' Action Plan.

The Reading Agency (TRA) is a UK wide library development agency.

TRA works to improve services to readers by inspiring, challenging and supporting libraries, working closely with the main library networking bodies, including the Society of Chief Librarians(SCL), the Association of Children's and Education Librarians (ASCEL) and the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP).
