Core Skills

Up to the point of looking at the [TRF] website I didn't really see talking to children about books as part of my job, and if I did I felt like I was just talking and not working. Now I encourage myself to do it more without feeling guilty.

Core Skills

This area of the site contains information, guidance and resources to help and support you in your work with children and young people as readers.

The Core Skills materials are divided into different topic areas:

By working through the Core Skills area, you will be able to

  • Identify the main skills needed for working with young readers and their parents and carers
  • Build those skills for yourself and/or help your colleagues develop their skills
  • Learn and share ideas for opening up reading for children and young people

The Core Skills presented in this section have been developed in consultation with library practitioners. All staff working in public libraries meet with children and teenagers - and will need most if not all of these skills.

Activity: Thinking about Skills

Before looking at the next section, think about and write down 3 skills which you think are particularly important for working with young people in the library. Talk about this with your library mentor. Then look at the list of Core Skills in the next section. Are your 3 skills there? If not, and you feel they should be included, email: info@theirreadingfutures.org.uk
