Getting Talking - ways to open up discussions about reading

This scenario looks at Core Skill D1: Becoming practised at talking with young people and knowing different ways to open up discussion with them about reading.

Setting the Scene

You are a library assistant helping with a class visit session. The class comes to the library once a month. The children have brought with them books they have read since the last visit. Some of the children have been keen to tell the group about what they have read but Nicola is more hesitant. You want to encourage Nicola to share her thoughts about her book.

How might you do this?

Option Description 
A Tell her you've read that book too, that you thought it was really sad at the end and ask if she agrees
B Ask Nicola what she feels about the design of the book cover. Ask her to think about whether it picks up on the storyline
