Treating People Well

Everyone who works in libraries will be meeting with young people whether it's at the counter, helping them at the shelves, or joining with them in storytimes, reading groups, or other activities.

This section is all about the skills and experience which help us act effectively in this day-to-day contact with young people, and gives you the opportunity, via the scenarios, to reflect on your existing skills, learn new skills, and discuss different ideas and approaches with your colleagues.

The smallest contact with a child or teenager could be the one that makes a difference - that opens up for young people the pleasures and possibilities of libraries and reading.

This section offers you a selection of scenarios to work through. Each scenario features a different library situation and is focused on one of the core skills listed in the section 'Treating People Well'.

If you are familiar with how the scenarios work then move straight on to the first scenario: Being Approachable and Understanding, otherwise take a look at the scenario help to get you started.
