Understanding Young People

This scenario relates to core skills A1, A3, C4 and D3. It is about developing confidence with young people and treating them respectfully. It also helps you to engage meaningfully with them about reading and other relevant resources offered by your service.

Setting the Scene

The local youth worker has arranged for a group of young people to visit the library. You suggest giving them a tour of the library but they don’t seem to be paying attention and all they can say is "reading’s boring.” Reflect how you would respond to this situation and choose one of the strategies below that is nearest to what you would do.

How might you approach the situation?

Option Description
A Try to keep your nerve and take them over to the People's Network. Tell them about the kind of websites that they can look at in the library and about the forms that they need to complete in order to use the computers.
B Say, "I can't believe none of you like reading! Surely some of you have read Harry Potter?"
C Invite them to have some refreshments in the young people's area of the library and give them some magazines to look at. Say, "reading's not for everyone. What kind of things do you like doing?"
