Listening Well - Scenario B

You selected b:

Listen to what they thought of their books as you serve other customers. You tell them how well they are doing and issue them with their stickers.

Feedback

  • Are you really listening? Or are you feeling pressured by the queue of customers? This isn't just a process to get through with children. It's an opportunity to really get to know the children's reading tastes. It is really important to avoid other distractions when you are talking to children.
  • Telling the children they are doing well probably won't seem sincere if you haven't taken the trouble to listen properly and the stickers aren't likely to be valued that highly, either.
  • This isn't sending the right message to the public or the staff about how we value young people as library users
