Talking to young people with respect

This scenario looks at Core Skill A3: Talking with young people about their reading with respect; treating them as individuals and equals.

Setting the Scene

It's that busy time on Saturday morning and Kelly has come in to change her books - she is keen to tell you about the book she has just read, because it was "brilliant!"

How would you respond?

Option Description
A Acknowledge Kelly's reading choice ("Oh, I'm glad you enjoyed that, it's really good, isn't it?") You then explain that although it's too busy to talk right now, if she can just wait a short while or maybe come back in five minutes, it would be great to hear all about it... and in the meantime, why not complete a library review sheet or look at the library reading group's ' Best Reads' board for more reading ideas?
B Tell Kelly you are not "the children's person" and that Jane, who talks to children about their reading is at lunch. Could Kelly come back another time?
C Tell Kelly you'd love to talk to her, but to come back another time, when there are fewer adults to serve.
