Treating People Well - Scenario B
You selected b:
You tell the playgroup that you can't accommodate them for a story session this time, but you arrange for them to make their next visit a bit of a party so that they feel special and know you are looking forward to seeing them.
Feedback
- Do everything you can to show how much the library can offer. The idea of a party session is a brilliant way of giving the group - and the individual children - a very special introduction to the library. Even though you have done your best this time, they may have picked up the vibes that you were a bit surprised to see them!
- Despite your best intentions, it's sometimes better to arrange for the playgroup to come in as a big group on another day of the week when you can concentrate on them, rather than squeeze them into an already overfilled space - especially if the library experience will be seriously undermined by there being too many children.
- But if this is what you have to do, make sure you talk it through properly with the playgroup leader so that they don't feel rejected.

Talk also with your colleagues and your manager, as appropriate, about this kind of situation. A strategy for contacting and involving playgroups would be useful here.
