Vision for Libraries

A shared vision, and mission, has been developed by all library services in England, about the work public libraries do with readers.

This mission, in common with Their Reading Futures, centres on the definition of reader development as 'the active way libraries work to create the best possible reading experience for everyone'.

You can read a description of this reading mission for libraries on a special powerpoint called Public Libraries' work with readers: a shared mission (PowerPoint presentation, 124Kb).

The information in this PowerPoint presentation links closely with the range of planning, evaluation and advocacy resources on the TRF website.

It also provides a range of supporting information to help libraries in developing their work with readers and demonstrating to partners, funders and stakeholders, the importance of this work

In addition, the following sites will give you a good picture of what's happening in reader development for both children and adults:

Activity: Your Vision

What do you think is the most important thing libraries can do for young readers? (There's no single right answer expected here!) Think of 3 simple and practical things which you can do individually, in your work in the library, to help and inspire young people in their reading. Discuss your ideas with your library mentor.
