What is Reader Development?

What is Reader Development?

This is the definition of reader development which is at the heart of Their Reading Futures.

It was agreed in consultation with libraries, to give a clear message about libraries' work with young people.

'Reader development describes the active way libraries work to create the best possible reading experience for everyone.'

Reader development for young people in libraries is delivered by skilled staff

  • Who are trained and enthusiastic about reading
  • Who are knowledgeable about books
  • Who connect with young readers and open up their reading horizons.
  • Their Reading Futures resources will help you build the skills you need for this work

Visit the Core Skills section to explore reader development skills further.

You will find that in the world of books and reading many groups and organisations are involved with reader development but there is no single definition to cover all this activity.

However, there is work going on which is moving towards a shared vision and a shared understanding of what libraries' work with readers is all about. Have a look our page, Vision for Libraries to find out more.
