Booked Up is the national reading initiative in England that encourages Y7 students (students aged 11 – 12) to read for pleasure by giving them a FREE book. Young people starting their first year at secondary school at participating schools can choose a book from one of 13 specially selected titles.
Schools wishing to take part sign up to the programme. Public libraries and school library services (SLS) can also sign up to the programme to support schools. Libraries display and loan out copies of the Booked Up books enabling children to try out the books before they make their selection.
The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCFS) is funding the project for a second year. The Reading Agency is working in partnership with Booktrust to promote the Booked Up programme to public libraries and SLS in England. Last year the programme was launched by the Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen and over 637000 children received a free book.
Libraries and schools sign up at the end of the summer school term and the project begins at the starts of the autumn term.
Booked Up creates exciting opportunities for libraries and SLS to work in partnership with schools. South Tyneside Libraries used Booked Up to set up a partnership with one of their local secondary schools to promote reading for pleasure to young people. Read more …..
