CILIP Carnegie winner 2008

The 2008 CILIP Carnegie Medal has been awarded to Philip Reeve for 'Here Lies Arthur' his fresh, bold retelling of the Arthurian legend.

The Carnegie Medal is the UK's oldest and most prestigious children's book award.

Themes for the shortlisted stories ranged from conflicts with Muslims in the Middle East, to the genocide of American Indians on the Mexican border in 1800.

The annual shortlist is decided by children's librarians and the process is shadowed by over 3,000 reading groups in schools and public libraries, involving more than 90,000 children and young people. The winner receives a golden medal and £500 worth of books to donate to a library of their choice.

The winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal has also been announced. This award is for distinguished illustration in a book for children.
